Owner Jack Shirley has worked in various capacities as engineer, producer, and/or musician with Deafheaven, Loma Prieta, Bosse-de-Nage, Punch, Whirr, La Bella, State Faults, Frameworks, and many others. Producer/engineer Jesse Nichols has worked with Iggy and the Stooges, Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin, Duran Duran, Doves, Death Valley High, Magik Magik Orchestra, Sarah Maclaughlin, Journey, White Stripes, The Allman Brothers, Santana, and others.
This studio facility houses two nearly identical control rooms, each opening into a single large tracking room. Both control rooms were designed using true RFZ principles, resulting in exceptional accuracy and imaging characteristics. The console in Control Room A is a 32-channel API 1608, while Control Room B features an SSL 4000G console. Both rooms have lots of tape machines (3 Otari MTR90s) and access to the 3 EMT140 plate reverbs. There is outboard gear by dbx, Ampex, Pultec, UTA, Chandler, Shadow Hills, Universal Audio, etc. Main monitors are ATC SCM150s, with ATC discrete analog amps and crossovers.
The tracking room features fully adjustable acoustics with easily adjustable absorptive and diffusive wall treatments. The acoustic cloud is diffusive as well, keeping the room's ambience nice and live when needed. The Atomic Garden also stocks a nice variety of vintage guitars, amps, keyboards, stomp boxes, and other toys. There are 3 isolation booths for each control room. And there's plenty of room to hang out in the lounge, plus machine rooms and a gear repair workshop. The EMT plates are housed in a corridor where they are fully isolated from the studio sounds.
The acoustical build-out and oversight was performed by Oakland native Will Rutherford and crew, with guidance and assistance from Tony Brett.
