Appalachian State University - Boone, NC

When designing an educational space for Appalachian State students to learn professional audio, there are a multitude of philosophies that educators have about the needs of a facility. Couple that philosophical education style, with public institutions, state government planning, a menagerie of physical plant subcontractors, multiple fiscal years and you have a recipe for what could become a treatise in the Nash Equilibrium. Despite all the possible missteps that can and do occur in construction - the Wes Lachot Design Group (WLDG) worked tirelessly to create an educational space for Appalachian State University. Without compromising, WLDG balanced all of the interests of the educators, the budget, and state government requirements to dramatically improve the Control Room B for the Hayes School of Music's Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio.

Home to the new 64 channel API Vision console, the Control Room B was designed by Wes Lachot and his team (including acoustician Aaron Kelly) as the first collaboration with an educational system in his home state of North Carolina. The front wall uses ATC SCM100 and two SCS70 subwoofer monitoring and is designed around his zero reflection principles and includes his proprietary diffusers throughout the wall and ceiling structures. The floated floor structure supports the massive API Vision console and two partially loaded 4 bay 16RU credenzas for future updates to the outboard equipment designed around two different floating floor designs to support wiring through the conduits to both credenzas as well as the Vision console.

Scott Wynne, program director for the Music Industry Studies program, specifically asked for the Wes Lachot Design Group for their high quality of work and to provide students the experience of using a Wes Lachot designed space in Control Room B while also having access to the Walters Storyk Design Group studio in Control Room A all in the same facility. The overarching philosophy that Wynne wanted was to insure a space that was as acoustically accurate as possible for the students and WLDG made that happen for Appalachian State University. The acoustical buildout was handled by Brett Acoustics, with technical wiring by Thom Canova and power/grounding design by Howard Hoyt of Pro Audio Engineering.
